MISSION STATEMENT

Our mission is to empower students of all faiths to recognize their inherent worth and sacredness so that they can live inspired lives of faith that do justice. Our hope is to be bridges for students to encounter God in mind, body, and soul: through their Heads (what is True), their Hands (what Is Good), and their Hearts (what is Beautiful).

We do this by creating an environment that fosters growth, self-expression, and compassion.

We achieve this through retreats, masses, and curriculum & instruction as teachers, coaches, campus ministers, & mentors.

HEARTS

At the core of Cristo Rey New York High School’s mission is a spirit of ‘cura personalis’, care for the whole person. Our students are not just capable scholars, experienced workers, and future college students, they are the beloved of God. Our work through retreats, masses, clubs, programs, and campus ministry spaces are there to remind our students of this unimpeachable truth of their inherent goodness and accompany them on their paths to both accepting this love and sharing it with others.

    • Retreats are vital to the education of our students atCristo Rey New York High School and each class has a chance to take time for building community, examining our lives, and experiencing the love of God.

      • FRESHMAN RETREAT - Fall

        • "Welcome to Community" Retreatants form relationships within their small groups while exploring how true community involves sharing your gifts, talents, and self in order to build something together. Just as God's covenant is explored throughout scripture, we build a covenant together here at Cristo Rey.

      • JUNIOR RETREAT - Winter

        • "PEACE" Retreatants participate in activities centered around Peace: peace within themselves, peace in relationships with others, and building Peace on Earth. Just as junior year is built around being peacebuilders in our communities and world throughout service, that peacebuilding must begin from within.

      • SENIOR GIRLS & BOYS RETREAT - Spring

        • "CAMINO" Retreatants will take an inward journey (a “camino”) through their past, present, and future – reflecting on their foundational virtue (“fundamento”) that they have carried each step of the way. Just as our seniors conclude their religion classes with us in which they’ve been challenged to “see God in all things” they now have a two day experience to explore that truth within their own lives.

      • SOPHOMORE RETREAT - Spring

        • "WHAT'S YOUR STORY?" Retreatants contemplate their own stories and deepen their relationships with peers by listening to each other's stories and life journeys. Especially in this year of encountering the love of Christ in scripture and study, students will have opportunities to reflect on their plans, expectations, and hopes, and how the answer to our "long loneliness" is love - a love that comes from community.

  • Prayer plays an essential role in the faith life of our students and staff at Cristo Rey New York High School. This shows itself most strongly during our sacramental all-school services throughout the year. While not every member of our community is Catholic, this is a time for all members of Cristo Rey to practice communion by joining together in reflection, solidarity, and care.

HEADS

As St. Anselm defined it, theology is “Faith seeking understanding” and our students at Cristo Rey New York High School journey towards a greater understanding of God in the world, in others, and in themselves. Through classes, programs, and experiences, our students learn to discover the relevance that studying theology has on the wider human experience and learn to claim their own faith for themselves - whatever that faith may be.

“I hope you come to find that which gives life a deep meaning for you. Something worth living for — may be even worth dying for – something that energizes you, enthuses you, enables you to keep moving ahead. I can’t tell you what it might be – that’s for you to find, to choose, to love. I can just encourage you to start looking and support you in the search.” - Ita Ford, spiritual founder

HANDS

From the very beginning, Cristo Rey New York High School was inspired by its spiritual founders St. Oscar Romero and the four martyred churchwomen of El Salvador to be a vessel of transformative justice. Fueled by a Catholic belief in the sacredness of every human person, our students are the living embodiment of that mission and their legacy, participating in service days, projects, and the work of becoming ‘professionals for others’ who transform their communities, society, and the world into more just places.
