THE CRISTO REY MODEL
Cristo Rey New York High School (CRNYHS) was founded in 2004 out of a great impulse to help bring about social justice. We aim to deliver a career-focused, college preparatory education in the Catholic tradition for students with limited economic resources, uniquely integrating rigorous academic curricula with four years of professional work experience (Corporate Work Study Program) and support to and through college.
Cristo Rey New York High School is a collaborative project of laymen, women, and representatives of three religious congregations: The Sisters of the Holy Child Jesus, the De La Salle Christian Brothers, and the Jesuits. Cristo Rey New York High School is funded through the generosity of individual and institutional benefactors.
We are a member of the Cristo Rey Network®. There are currently 40 Cristo Rey Network® schools across the country. We share the Network's motto, “Strengthening the competence, confidence, and aspiration of students from economically disadvantaged families and empowering them to build fulfilling lives that advance the common good,” and we follow its Mission Effectiveness Standards.
The Cristo Rey Network® of schools was founded in 2001 when school leaders met to replicate the unique standards of Cristo Rey Jesuit High School in Chicago, IL.
In 2003, the Cristo Rey Network® was formally organized as a 501(c) (3) organization.
B.J. and Bebe Cassin were the first philanthropists to promote the scaling up of the Cristo Rey Network. Today, dozens of foundations, including the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and individual donors throughout the country have contributed to the efforts of the Cristo Rey Network.
